One of
the most celebrated athletes the sport of figure skating has
ever known, Peggy Fleming adopted Colorado Springs as her
hometown in 1965 when she moved to the Pikes Peak region to
train with legendary coach Carlo Fassi. Working under Fassi's
tutelage at the Broadmoor World Arena, Fleming became one
of the most successful figure skaters in history, blending
a rare combination of precision and grace that thrilled audiences
worldwide.
From
1964-68, Fleming was America's premier figure skater, winning
five consecutive U.S. National Championships. Her dominance
extended to the international arena as well, where she won
three consecutive World Championships from 1966-68 and a gold
medal at the 1968 Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble, France.
Fleming concluded her competitive
career in the late 1960s, and has since remained active in
the sport of figure skating as a performer in numerous television
specials and as a commentator for ABC Sports. A recipient
of numerous honors, Fleming is a member of the United States
Olympic Hall of Fame and the United States Figure Skating
Association Hall of Fame.
Fleming graduated from
Colorado Springs' Cheyenne Mountain High School and later
attended Colorado College.
